Japanese scientists have developed the thinnest medical tape

Release date: 2009-08-07

Scientists at Waseda University and the Japanese National Defense Medical College have recently developed a "nano-film" for surgery. It is only 75 nanometers thick and is one thousandth of cellophane. It can be used to repair wounds in the body and degrade itself in the body. Researchers say this is the world's thinnest medical tape.

According to reports, surgeons usually use sutures or stapling to treat wounds, and sometimes they also use fibrin-coated medical films. Although fibrin can condense blood and bind to wounds, it often causes unnecessary adhesion to nearby tissues. The transparent, new viscous film is made from a substance extracted from the crab shell and a seaweed gel. It is extremely flexible and can adhere to the organ without adhesive. Unnecessary tissue adhesion can be avoided.

The researchers repeatedly experimented with dogs. They used a newly developed medical tape on a wound with a pleural diameter of about 6 cm around the lungs of the dog. After one month, the wound healed well. The researchers plan to conduct clinical trials three years later.
