Walnut tree moisture and young fruit management from May to June

Moisture management

Seasonal characteristics. From May to June, there is generally high temperature and little rain. During this period, the walnut tree grows rapidly, blooms, and develops fruits. A lot of water is needed, which should be supplemented by irrigation. The period and frequency of irrigation depends on the climate, the amount of soil moisture, and the growth of walnut trees. Irrigation methods should also be based on local water source conditions and equipment conditions, such as irrigation, sprinkler irrigation, drip irrigation, etc.

Irrigation time. Irrigating water for 1 to 3 times during drought in summer is essential for the growth and development of walnuts. After the walnut blooms and before the flower buds differentiate, that is, around June, after the female flower is fertilized, the fruit enters a fast growth period, and the growth volume accounts for about 80% of the annual growth volume. By the end of June, the female flower buds begin to differentiate. During this period, a large amount of nutrients and water supply are needed, so it should be irrigated once to ensure that the nucleolus is full. The walnut hard-core period in June requires a large amount of water supply. Generally, it is required to irrigate 1 to 2 times a month during the summer dry season, with more irrigation for young trees and less irrigation for trees in full fruit period.

Pay attention to drainage. In areas prone to accumulation of water and excessively high groundwater levels, attention should be paid to drainage work, mainly by digging drainage ditches. For temporary local accumulation of water, mechanical drainage can also be used. To lower the water level, dig a 1.5-meter-deep drainage ditch or during site preparation. Build terraces to lower the water level.

Young fruit management

Early fruiting walnuts. Early-fruiting walnuts are dominated by the side flower buds and the number of female flowers is large. After the full fruit period, in order to ensure the relative balance of vegetative growth and reproductive growth of the tree, and maintain high and stable yields, too many young fruits must be thinned out. The fruit thinning time is after the physiological fruit drop, generally 20 to 30 days after the female flower is fertilized, that is, when the young fruit is 1 to 1.5 cm, it is appropriate to thin the fruit. The amount of fruit thinning should be determined according to tree vigor and cultivation conditions. Generally, it is advisable to retain 60-100 fruits per square meter of crown projection area.

Fruit thinning method. Thin out the young fruits on weak trees or weak branches first, and also cut them off together with weak branches; when each inflorescence has more than 3 young fruits, depending on the strength of the fruiting branches, 2 to 3 can be kept; The inside of the crown should be evenly distributed, and the dense inner bore can be more sparse. It should be paid special attention to that thinning is limited to early-fruiting walnut varieties with a high fruit-setting rate.
