Dutch scientific community recently discovered natural defense genes in tomatoes

Identifying the genes for natural defensive function in tomatoes will help tomato processing companies to save costs, and ultimately food processors can use these common food ingredients. Dutch researcher Marco Kruijt has already discovered two disease-resistance genes in a traditional variety before the modern potato variety was innovated. He found that two of the same genes in several wild tomato varieties can resist Cladosporium fulvum fungal disease. In Europe, 8.5 million tons of tomatoes are harvested annually, of which 1.5 million tons are sold directly to consumers and 7 million tons are processed into ketchup and spices. Tomatoes are increasingly interested in the food industry because of their health-enhancing characteristics (ie, the promotion of healthy lycopene). Market analysts Frost and Sullivant expect that the lycopene market will grow at a rate of over 100%, with a value of $34 million (27.6 million euros) reported in 2003. Due to the overproduction that began in 1999 and continued in 2000, the food industry is increasingly enjoying the benefits of reduced prices for tomatoes. Despite the surplus in production, recent research in the Netherlands will bring savings income to farmers.
