Spiders that produce spider silk protein
Researchers at NeXIA Biotechnology in Quebec, Canada, used genetically modified technology to produce spider silk proteins from mammalian cells and invented a method to extract it. The research results were published in the latest edition of the journal Science. In terms of human understanding of the natural world, spider silk is recognized as one of the toughest natural fiber materials. Because of its characteristics, spider silk is not only suitable for self-defense armor, but also for medical sutures. However, unlike silkworms, spiders are difficult to domesticate, so humans have not been able to produce spider silk in large quantities. NEXIA has been working on the development and production of spider silks, specializing in the technology of spider silk used in the medical, military and industrial markets. The researchers revealed that they used gene technology to replicate the genes of spider silk production and transferred the gene to other animal cells for success. A new method for extracting spider silk proteins by water treatment was developed. The company said that the genetically modified goats they bred are about to produce milk, and their goat milk contains spider silk protein. Having this genetically modified goat is like building a spider silk protein production plant. NEXIA’s research was funded by the Canadian Department of Defense and the U.S. military. The company's president and executive officer, Jefferettner, called their product "bio-steel," and stated that the company's next goal is to produce commercially available spider silk proteins in large quantities.
