The retina can be used to detect Parkinson's disease

Release date: 2018-05-29

Spanish researchers have reported that they have detected alpha-synuclein, which is closely related to the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease, on the retina for the first time. This finding is expected to be used in the early diagnosis of neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease.

Alpha-synuclein is considered to be one of the chief culprits of Parkinson's disease. This protein is widely present in the human brain and central nervous system. After misfolding, it is easy to accumulate in the brain, leading to brain cell death or hindering the normal function of brain cells.

According to the official website of the University of Alicante in Spain, the research team cooperated with American counterparts to detect the retinas donated by patients with deceased Parkinson's disease, and compared their clinical data and pathological anatomical results, it was found that Parkinson also existed on the retina of these people. A characteristic marker in the brain of a patient, a coagulated Lewis body formed by the accumulation of alpha-synuclein.

Research leader Nicholas Cuenca said: "The retina is the window of the brain, which can accurately reflect the internal conditions of the brain. The discovery of biomarkers of Parkinson's disease on the retina is a breakthrough, which may help us to develop clinically in patients. Early detection before symptoms."

The researchers also found that the more alpha-synuclein accumulated on the retina, the greater the number of Lewy bodies, and the more severe the Parkinson's disease.

Cuenca pointed out that further verification of the technology could be applied to the living retina. Once confirmed, in addition to Parkinson's disease, early diagnosis of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease and multiple sclerosis can be tried. (

Greenhouse Hydroponic System

Hydroponics is a subset of hydroculture, the method of growing plants without soil, using mineral nutrient solutions in a water solvent. Terrestrial plants may be grown with only their roots exposed to the mineral solution, or the roots may be supported by an inert medium, such as perlite or gravel. The nutrients in hydroponics can come from an array of different sources; these can include but are not limited to waste from fish waste, duck manure, or normal nutrients.
