Alzheimer's disease test takes only ten minutes

Release date: 2015-08-20

Scientists are still at a loss as to how to develop fast and inexpensive Alzheimer's disease detection instruments. However, a New York startup, Cerebral, found a way to develop a game-like tool, Cognivue, to capture early symptoms of the disease.

According to the Washington Post, Cognivue is a cognitive assessment tool that discovers some of Alzheimer's symptoms from a computer. The patient sits in front of the screen and uses the mouse to track a series of clear but constantly moving points. As the point continues to move, patients in the early stages of Alzheimer will find it very difficult.

This test, which took only ten minutes, has caught the attention of the FDA and received a marketing license in June. Company CEO Charles Duffy said that the population is getting older and more people need cheap Alzheimer testing equipment. Cognivue just meets this condition.

To obtain FDA approval, Cerebral has designed a 401-person experiment, the youngest being 13 years old. Subjects were divided into three groups according to their cognitive abilities: normal, mild cognitive impairment, and cognitive impairment. The researchers then compared the results of Cognivue with existing test methods. Studies have shown that Cognivue can determine the early symptoms of Alzheimer.

According to some doctors, this device may be more effective than other devices. Often, people must spend thousands of dollars and several hours to complete a neurological disease test to get results. Existing detection methods, such as the Mini-Mental State Exam, can only generally determine the patient's cognitive status, but cannot be defined. Linda Rice, a New York primary care physician, said she has been using Cognivue for a year in the clinic and is convinced of its test results.

The Washington Post notes that there is still a distance from Cognivue as an independent test. Currently Cognivue is only approved for medical workers to conduct extensive evaluation of cognitive function, and its validity in individuals who have been educated for less than 12 years remains to be tested. .
