Scientists develop tomato with anthocyanin
Scientists at the University of Oregon have used traditional crossbreeding techniques to produce a purple tomato, which, like red wine, contains anthocyanins that are beneficial to human cardiovascular health. It is understood that this anthocyanin has never been found in the tomato varieties currently planted. In addition, the new varieties of tomato also contain carotenoids and lycopene. The expanded cultivation of this species will provide people with a new nutritional value of tomatoes, so that people get more benefits from the tomatoes. In order to obtain a new tomato variety, the researchers will crossbreed native tomatoes with tomatoes containing the anthocyanin gene (the fruit anthocyanin gene), cultivate the two new generations of anthocyanin-containing seeds for two generations, and then return them to the original parent. To confirm that the anthocyanin (Aft) gene, which is the dominant gene, has been transferred to the anthocyanin tomato. After the chemical analysis of the tomato containing the anthocyanin gene of the fruit and the tomato without the anthocyanin gene, the pigment component of the anthocyanin was detected in the tomato containing the anthocyanin gene. The study also confirmed that tomatoes containing anthocyanins will pass the anthocyanin gene to the next generation.
