According to foreign media reports, US researchers said they have developed a new type of wearable medical patch that can be attached to the skin to monitor cardiovascular health and skin conditions. The tiny device is only two square inches large, it uses thousands of liquid crystals from its flexible substrate to indicate body temperature, and changes color to show potential problems to the wearer. According to scientists at Northwestern University and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, it can wear continuous health monitoring throughout the day. “Our equipment is not conspicuous, it is very thin and very comfortable, just like skin,†said Yonggang Huang, a senior researcher at Northwestern University. Another researcher from Northwestern University said the device is "very practical -- when your skin is stretched, compressed or twisted, the device will stretch, compress or twist." 　 Changes in the temperature of the skin surface can indicate the blood flow velocity associated with a person's cardiovascular health and can also indicate skin moisture content. The dense arrangement of the color changing liquid crystals forms a profile of the body portion of the skin covered by the device. Researchers at Nature Communications say that with the help of algorithms, those temperature information can be turned into accurate health summary reports in less than 30 seconds. They pointed out that the spatial resolution provided by 3,600 liquid crystals is equivalent to the infrared skin sensing technology currently used in hospitals. They also claim that the infrared technology is expensive and suitable for laboratory and clinical practice only, while skin sensors are both inexpensive and portable. John A. Rogers of the University of Illinois pointed out that "this technology greatly expands the functionality of skin devices." Yonggang Huang said that the medical field may not be the only area that can benefit from this device. “It’s conceivable that cosmetic companies are interested in portable, non-invasive skin dryness measurement techniques,†he said. “This is the first device to support this feature.†Wearable technology is booming, even in the consumer arena. Wearable products such as new smart watches, pedometers, health monitors, and activity trackers have sprung up. Like many other new technologies, wearable technology seems to be particularly attractive to young people.
