Release date: 2014-12-08 Kinsa Health in New York has released an FDA-approved smartphone thermometer. The thermometer is available for purchase through CVS and the Apple Store, and is also available online through Amazon, Apple and Kinsa. The Kinsa thermometer was licensed in January and can be connected to the phone via the headphone jack of the smartphone. The thermometer is also placed in the mouth and depressed or rectal to measure body temperature. Data from the device can be sent to the app attached to the phone to record the user's temperature, measurement time and other data, such as the user's feelings. For children, the app also provides a video simulation of temperature measurements to distract the child and calm them down. Kinsa sells for $14.99 for its test users and $29.99 for the thermometer. The company also hopes to generate real-time health maps through the use of temperature to track the spread of disease. The app will also integrate third-party data, such as data from CDC and data from other partners. Kinsa is now only shipping devices on Apple's network and physical stores, and another digital healthcare company, Fitbit, has recently been squeezed out of the Apple Store. In November, Apple's online store removed Fitbit products, but tracking devices from other companies including Jawbone, Withings and iHealth are still on sale. This move may be related to Fitbit's recent refusal to integrate its app with Apple's Healthkit platform. Kinsa is also not integrated into Healthkit. Although Apple has temperature measurements in its Healthkit, there is no connection thermometer integrated into the Healthkit platform. Kinsa's CEO said in an email to MobihealthNews that the company would like to integrate into Healthkit, which is expected to be integrated early next year.
