US scientists develop high-sensitivity microsphere detection technology or can be used for early diagnosis of type I diabetes

Release date: 2014-08-19

Scientists from the Massachusetts General Hospital have developed a new fluorescence-based detection method that allows the sensitivity of antibodies to be detected using a few microliters of serum samples. The sensitivity of detection is at least traditional radioimmunoassay. More than 50 times the sensitivity of detection, the traditional radioimmunoassay is the gold standard commonly used in clinical practice, and the related research is published in the international journal TECHNOLOGY.

This new assay is highly attractive for immunological testing because it can: 1) use less sample; 2) also based on traditional analytical systems such as standard real-time quantitative PCR, but compared to traditional ELISA The method of this new technology has a smaller sampling volume. Researcher Martin Yarmush said the new technology is highly sensitive, which provides more accurate results for disease detection and helps predict the next step in disease progression.

This new detection technology integrates some of the current technologies to make the detection process more sensitive, non-radioactive, and clinically relevant. Researchers hope that this new technology can be used as an effective tool for islet cell antibodies to the body of patients at risk for diabetes ( Islet cell autoantibodies (ICA) conducts early detection, which is critical for later judgment of the onset of interventions and prevention of diabetes. This new detection technology is based on Rolling Ring Amplification Detection (RCA) and is designed by the researchers to be used in other antigen-antibody detection processes. In this study, the researchers revealed the ability of this new technology to detect super-detection on two different autoantibodies. The next step is to use a variety of engineering modifications to enhance the functionality of this new technology, including simultaneous Multiple antigens or antibodies are detected.
