Wearable Technology: Medical Applications Save Life

According to the World Health Organization, epilepsy affects about 50 million people worldwide and is a common severe brain disorder.

It is not easy to diagnose epilepsy

Seizures can only be recorded when the patient uses an electroencephalogram (EEG) machine.

"Epilepsy is widespread, and... many different types of epilepsy respond differently to different medical treatments," said Dr. Vincent Navarro, a neurologist at the Sabate Charity Hospital in Paris.

"Also, seizures are not regular. Therefore, it is difficult to document the symptoms when doing a standard 20- to 1-hour EEG recording.

"Finally, non-epileptic conditions have a probability of misdiagnosing as epilepsy, even if their origins are completely different. For example, loss of consciousness may be related to the heart or may be mental."

The hospital is now working on a project that wants to make diagnosis easier and faster.

There is no need to use a lot of machines connected to the line. The patient only needs to wear a T-shirt and an optional hat at home, as well as a biosensor that can transmit information to the smartphone application.

"We don't need a desktop computer. The desktop computer makes the patient must lie in bed. We use a smart phone and wireless connection," said Pierre Funier, who is the chairman of Bioserenity, which makes the Wemu system.

"You need to record the brain's electronic activity, EEG. This signal is very, very difficult to capture - this is a microvolt signal, and instead the ECG is millivolts, so this is a thousand times smaller."

“The smartphone will do the first level of processing, and then the Internet connection will send the information to the cloud (to analyze).”

The exact diagnosis can be completed in a few days or weeks, and it doesn't take a few years – and then get the right treatment.

"Epilepsy is not a one-time diagnosis. He will seriously affect people's meaningful, independent life." Carol Ireland said she is the project leader of the Australian Association for the Prevention of Epilepsy.

Developing technologies like this means navigating the responsible regulatory framework.
